Interview with an Author: Joyce & Alexandra Swann PLUS Review of The Force & Book Lover’s Giveaway

Welcome back for the 3rd part of my Interview with an Author series. As indicated in the title above, this post also includes the last questions posed to Alexandra and Joyce Swann, my review of The Force, and a wonderful giveaway! Please do read all the way to the end, and be sure to enter for a chance to win several lovely books.

What would you say to a young person who aspires to be a writer? What advice would you give? Also, what would you tell his/her parents in order to help them be supportive in their child’s efforts to pursue writing as a career?

Being a writer is very difficult. It’s very hard work–both in the creation and in the selling of what you write. It is also very difficult emotionally because you face a lot of rejection and since the rejection is of something that you have created, it feels very personal. There are many new avenues for a young aspiring writer to connect with audiences now, but taking advantage of all of these is time consuming and requires a lot of patience. I would tell parents to be supportive–emotionally. I would tell the young person to understand that if you want to do this you are going to have to plan on working at another job and pursuing your writing in your spare time. You have to decide whether you want to pursue writing for your own pleasure or you want to try to make it a career. If you want to try to make it your career, be prepared to work at it over a long period of time just like any career. But don’t give up on your dreams. If you have the talent and the determination and you keep going, doors will open up for you to sell your work.

What other projects will you be working on in the near future?

Right now we are not sure. We would like to take the character of Fred Kowalski, the detective from The Force, and make him the central character in a new series of books. He would continue to be employed by GenTech but the Sinclairs would not play a role in the new series other than as possible cameo appearances. While the readers would know that Fred was employed by GenTech, the books would involve “happenstance” crimes that come to his attention. For instance, while vacationing in New Mexico’s Lincoln National Forest with his wife Annie, he becomes involved in “The Campground Murders.”

What do you think of this direction for the books? The authors would love to hear your feedback! Just leave a comment below.

My Review of The Force

I have been a book lover all of my life. I remember sitting next to my mama as a very small child, watching her read, and flipping through my own books as she read hers. Over the years, my fondness for books has turned into a passion, and I am always in the process of reading something. Often that ‘something’ includes a bible study or other devotional type of book, a non-fiction selection, and a christian novel. With the arrival of digital devices such as the iPad, the Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD + Tablet, etc. this has become even easier, and I am able to take many books with me wherever I go, a fact which I think would fill any book lover with joy! I read  The Fourth Kingdom (prequel), and thought it was fabulous, so I was very eager to continue learning about the Sinclairs and Josef Helmick in The Force. Some highlights of The Force:

  • Minute detail
  • Descriptive prose
  • Well-developed characters
  • Emotional topics ~ The reader’s interest is piqued.  One quickly becomes attached to the characters and the story
  • Well-done research~ It is obvious that Joyce and Alexandra have gone deep into the archives to learn in-depth about religions and other cultures in order to write this book well
  • Good versus Evil ~ We all know there is evil in the world. Alexandra and Joyce have captured that truth, but have also woven the Truth into the story in a way that brings everything back to God’s redemption story.

If you enjoy mystery, suspense, detail, and simply great storytelling, then this book is for you! Be sure to enter the Rafflecopter below for your chance to win The Force, as well as other well-written books by some of my favorite authors!

I just bought a whole bunch of books in a healthy living bundle, so all of the m are in my TBR pile. 🙂

  2. JaniceG says:

I have many books TBR. I want to get into some nonfiction, one by Max Lucado and another by Chip Ingram. Next my husband and I will be reading the new Chris Fabry book during our commute time unless my husband wants to read a Randy Singer book first. I am currently engaged with Are We There Yet? and a fiction book by Alana Terry. Wow!!Way too many good books to read and review. Want to fit your great books in there, too, but I am a slow reader so I am hopeful of speeding up or else getting some in audible, etc., so I can hear the book stories while I accomplish other tasks.

    • I just started Almost Heaven, by Fabry, last night and it is excellent? Is that the new one you were referring to? I just learned about him. i agree, tons of books on my TBR list! Thanks for stopping in to comment. 🙂
